Sharjah, UAE - Mahmoud Al Mawas scored a hat-trick as Syria cruised to a 4-0 win over the Maldives to put them on the verge of securing top spot in Group A of the second round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the AFC Asian Cup China 2023.
Syria lies on top of the table with 18 points from 6 games and the second placed China got 10 points from 5 games. Meanwhile Maldives lies on fourth position with 6 points from 6 games.
Maldives started the match without ace striker, Ali Ashfaq after he got positive for Covid-19 at Sharjah Stadium, UAE on Friday.
Maldives started the game very well in the first 29 minutes and created a good goal scoring opportunity. However Ibrahim Mahudhee's shot inside the box went wide.
Al Mawas scoered the opener for Syria in the 29th minute and four minutes later Aosman doubled the lead from a penalty.
In the additional time of the first half Al Mawas converted another penalty and changed the score to 3-0.
Al Mawas changed the score to 4-0 in the 71st minutes from the third penalty awarded against the Maldives byb UAE referee Al Jeneibi.
Six minutes before the normal time Ajaan was sent off with a second booking.
Maldives will play against China and Philippines on 11th and 15th June respectively.
