Male', MALDIVES - A stoppage time goal from defender John Johnson was the decider as 2016 AFC Cup runners up edged past Maziya Sports and Recreation 1-0 in the AFC Cup group stage game today.
Maziya's goalkeeper Pavel Matiash failed to properly deal with a long ball into the box from Bengaluru's goalkeeper Amrinder Singh, which fell to Marijan Jugovic who was in the box. Jugovic crossed the ball across goal for Johnson to slot the ball in to the back of the net from the far post.
With a game of few clear cut chances, Bengaluru enjoyed the majority of the possession. Sunil Chetri missed an open chance in the second half, and the Maziya's defence was compact for the majority of the game.
Mohamed Umair had good ball played in to him in either half. A good through ball in the first half saw Umair through on goal, but his controll let him down on that occassion. In the second half a powerful shot from Assadulla Abdulla was blocked by goalkeeper Amrinder, and Sandesh Jhingan made a brillant tackle to stop Umair from reaching the rebound.
Bengaluru now lead Group E with 6 points, with Maziya and Mohun Bagan level on 3 points. Dhaka Abahani is yet to get off the mark, with 2 defeats in as many games.
Mohun Bagan came from behind to beat Dhaka Abahani 3-1 in the other game played in the group today.
